Mathematics Curriculum Philosophy Statement

The Saint Ambrose of Woodbury Catholic School math curriculum strives to instill confidence in students by providing a solid foundation in fundamental mathematical skills preparing students to use the analytical concepts and mathematical reasoning necessary to perform real world problem solving. We are committed to challenging students and maintaining high academic standards.

At Saint Ambrose of Woodbury Catholic School, our math curriculum is based on the Minnesota State Standards. We have a blended approach to mathematics instruction, incorporating both the knowledge of basic facts with real world application. Teachers vary their instruction with small group work, large group instruction, use of technology, hands-on learning and leveled practice to best challenge and support all learners. On-line components of K-8 texts allow parents and students to access support tools for practice at home.

In grades K-1, the McGraw Hill My Math©2018 resources support teachers as they guide students in developing number sense and problem solving skills.

In grades 2-8, the Pearson enVisionMATH 2.0 ©2017 resources support teachers in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students.

Beginning in grade 5, students are ability grouped in math. We offer two levels of math in grades 5-8, some students work at grade level, and others take a course allowing them to work above grade level. These courses are:

Course Descriptions

5th Grade Math

This course is the last in the general math curriculum. Students will extend their knowledge of number and operations, algebraic thinking, measurement and data analysis. Students will complete the Minnesota state mathematics standards for 5th grade .

Middle School Course 1

Students will develop fluency with multiplication and division of fractions and decimals, connect ratio and rate to multiplication and division, evaluate expressions, and use formulas to solve problems.

Middle School Course 2

In Course 2, students develop an understanding of number and operations in Algebra and Geometry, use formulas, solve linear equations, use proportions to make estimates, and use theoretical probability to make predictions.

Pre-Algebra

This course prepares students for Algebra I. The Pre-Algebra curriculum is designed to expand the student’s knowledge of the four mathematics strands covered in this course, which are: number and operation, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability.

Algebra

This course extends through problem solving techniques, linear and quadratic functions, inequalities, graphing, systems of equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring, exponents and radical functions, and operations with rational functions.

Geometry

This course is designed to develop formal and informal reasoning. Geometry develops visual thinking and students’ ability to construct, reason with, interpret, and apply mathematical models of patterns in two and three dimensions.
